Brief Biography

Dr. Nicholas Okumu, MD, MMed, MBA. Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Nicholas Okumu is an orthopaedic surgeon and a dynamic leader in the healthcare sector in Kenya. He has served as the Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at Kenyatta National Hospital and currently leads the Orthopaedic Oncology Unit at the same institution. In addition, Dr. Okumu is the CEO of Stratus Medical. He obtained his Master of Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery from the University of Nairobi and holds an MBA from the University of South Wales. His educational background is further enriched by specialized training in project management and leadership from prestigious institutions like Harvard University and the University of Washington. As a 2024 Global Surgery Advocacy Fellow, a collaborative initiative by Operation Smile, the University of Global Health Equity, and the Nkafu Policy Institute, Dr. Okumu is passionately committed to enhancing orthopaedic care, improving healthcare accessibility in Kenya, and mentoring future healthcare leaders.

  1. Promoting Universal Healthcare Access: Striving to achieve universal healthcare coverage in Kenya, incorporating advanced healthcare technologies alongside traditional medical services.
  2. Advancing Orthopaedic Oncology Care: Focusing on the enhancement of detection and treatment processes for musculoskeletal conditions, especially within the field of orthopaedic oncology.
  3. Innovative Healthcare Leadership: Spearheading Stratus Medical to be a front-runner in the realm of healthcare technology and services.
  4. Mentorship and Professional Development: Leveraging his extensive experience to guide and educate the next wave of healthcare professionals, fostering an environment of innovation and lifelong learning.

Policy Advocacy for Healthcare Improvements: Actively advocating for policy changes to optimize resource allocation, enhance preventive healthcare measures, and improve early detection methodologies for musculoskeletal diseases.
